I have a UK passport and am permanent resident of Spain. I am visiting America am flying from Madrid so my passport is valid. On my way home I will come from America to Heathrow then on to Alicante the same day. Travelling from Heathrow to Spain how much time do I need on my passport as I only have 4 months left on it. Many thanks if you can help.

It should be 3 months after you leave the EU but I think that is waived if you are a resident in Spain and not leaving.

Thanks. I thought this to be the case. I tried looking on Gov.I'm but couldn't find the answer. Thank you again.

Actually the gov site says that if you have a residents permit you can enter Spain with a valid passport and do not need any additional validity on the passport. I'm assuming that means as long as it is in date. Remembering that the 10 years validity is from the date of issue.

This I understand but wondered how much time. For example my passport will run out in August this year. Only 4 months.

Sorry but don't quite understand. As far as I can see, if you are a resident and your passport is in date then you don't need to have the 3 months required for when you leave the Schengen area as you won't be. Provided you have your TIE and your passport is in date then there is no extra 3 months required. Just a valid passport in date and it doesn't matter how long it has to go.

Oh, and if they stop you and give you the Spanish Inquisition because you haven't got 3 months left on, don't sue me as it's just my reading of it.
